Hip Hop: The New Age

If you ask someone what they think about hip hop today, more than likely they would say something along the lines of, “it’s terrible. Nowhere near how it was in the 90’s”. Now, half of that statement is true. The other half, even though it’s an opinion, is wrong in my eyes.

1458752180_c1e919d71e9dca6ad5c495eefdf5c897   Hip hop today is nowhere near where is was in the 90’s, but that doesn’t make it terrible. In my opinion, it’s better. It’s more universal now, and has done nothing but evolved. Over the years, hip hop has evolved to something more than just boom bap rap. Of course, you can still find that type of music today in people like Joey Badas$$ and the rest of Pro Era, but hip hop has created so many new sub genres of hip hop. This makes the culture more universal and allows the artists to gain all kinds of fans.

If you want the golden age lyrical spitter, we have people like Logic, Mick Jenkins, King Los, and many MANY more. Or some people don’t like thinking too much when they listen to music. Maybe they just want to vibe out and turn up. This is where artists like the controversial Young Thug, Rae Sremmurd, and Future come in to play. The other hip hop fans want a happy medium between those 2 categories. They want lyrics, but not necessarily lyrical masterminds, but they also want to vibe out.

These people go to artists such as Drake, ASAP Rocky, and Big Sean. This just goes to show that hip hop has gotten so much bigger as a culture and not all new hip hop is bad, just not for every listener.

Today’s hip hop is not trash, or garbage, or whatever that old head in the back of the barber shop wants to call it. It is just different and growing. I can’t wait to see what hip hop evolves to over the years.
